May
This past month, the province of New Brunswick has been in bloom!
In the final days of May, the heat has signalled a rapid seasonal shift and brings hopes of abundance this growing season. Across the province, garden planning efforts are becoming tangible, and many are getting their hands in the dirt to reconnect with the land.
Earlier this month, we saw significant change across NB municipalities as newly elected councillors and mayors were chosen to make change in their communities. During our recent “Could you be living in a food desert?” webinar, we were reminded of the role that local leadership can play in building healthy, resilient, and connected communities, and we look forward to seeing how these new leaders will help shape their communities' food policies.
Further abroad, global geopolitical and economic uncertainty continue to shape life close to home, impacting affordability and people’s ability to meet basic needs. Despite newly released PROOF data suggesting a slight dip in levels of household food insecurity in N.B. in 2025, “estimates are still among the highest observed in the twenty years of monitoring,” and food banks and community organizations across New Brunswick continue to report significant increases in demand, reminding us that data is not always reflective of the rapidly shifting realities communities are experiencing today.
At Food For All NB, we continue to navigate these dualities. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been privileged to collect stories of food actions from Community Food Mentors across the province through our CFM in Action campaign (and we can’t wait to celebrate these stories on May 29th!), while also continuing to support collaborative efforts focused on upstream solutions for stronger food systems and improved food security in New Brunswick.
As we head toward the summer months and prepare for what is expected to be another intense wildfire season, we want to sow seeds of collective care and community connection with you all. Through some of the heaviness and uncertainty, let’s stay connected, listen to each other, and continue to move toward our shared goals together. |
