JULY

July brings a focus on Disability Pride Month, a crucial time to highlight the intersections of disability and food security. People with disabilities are twice as likely to have food insecurity according to a Statistics Canada report released last year. People with disabilities are still at higher risk of food insecurity even when researchers accounted for income, employment status, education and other demographic factors. This research supports what disability justice advocates have been sharing for years and highlights that food insecurity stems from structural inequities that disproportionately affect equity deserving groups.

This month we are highlighting the Canada Disability Benefit, and how to apply. While the benefit is insufficient to address all barriers to improve food security, it will improve conditions for some.

SCHOOL FOOD
Announcement from the NB School Food Coalition
School Food Programs Matter to New Brunswickers – Now More than Ever

The NB School Food Coalition warmly congratulates the provincial government on its historic $19 million investment to launch school lunch programs across the province this fall.

With lunches set to begin and the province’s support for federal cost-shared breakfast programs steadily growing, New Brunswick is entering a new chapter in education that puts student well-being at the forefront.

Momentum is building behind universal school food programs. They boost academic success, support physical and mental health, and foster equity and belonging. They strengthen community resilience and deliver lasting value, both during a student’s time in school and well beyond graduation.

While summer brings a well-earned break, the work to build a strong, inclusive school food system is just beginning. We remind New Brunswickers and decision-makers of the transformative impact of universal school food programs. School food is a practical and proven investment, and is a strategic and compassionate move needed by our children and families now more than ever.

With gratitude and continued support,
On behalf of the New Brunswick School Food Coalition

JUILLET
